ere
O.E. ær (adv., conj., & prep.), from Gmc. *airiz, comp. of *air "early," from PIE *ayer- "day, morning" (cf. Avestan ayar "day," Gk. eerios "at daybreak"). The adv. erstwhile retains the O.E. superl. ærest "earliest."
