Evans, Herbert McLean (1882–1971), American anatomist and physiologist. Evans made classic contributions to endocrinology and vitaminology. He was one ofthe few scientists to study both hormones and vitamins. In 1915 he published an explanation of the physiological behavior of vital stains in the benzidine series and did research on azo dyes, and inparticular the dye now called Evans blue.

Evans blue n.
A diazo dye used to determine blood volume on the basis of the dilution of a standard solution of the dye in the plasma after its intravenous injection; it is also used as a vital stain for following diffusion through blood vessel walls.
