genetic 
"pertaining to origins," coined 1831 by Carlyle from Gk. genetikos "genitive," from genesis "origin" (see genus). Biological sense first recorded in Darwin, 1859. Genetics (patterned on ethics, etc.) is 1872 meaning "laws of origination," 1905 for "study of heredity," a coinage of Eng. biologist William Bateson (1861-1926).
