–noun, plural -ta, -tas.
a traditional Japanese wooden clog that is worn outdoors, with a thong that passes between the first two toes and with two transverse supports on the bottom of the sole.

Origin:
1880–85; < Japn, perh. by ellipsis from shita-geta, equiv. to shita below, under + -geta, comb. form of keta slat, lath; or ge (< MChin, equiv. to Chin xià below) + Japn (i)ta board
