GG emerges in the 1990s with online multiplayer games, such as Quake and Diablo. The makers of StarCraft, first released in 1998, have claimed that their gaming community first coined the term.

GG became such a key part of the culture of online gaming that, in 2000, it was featured in the official FAQ section of the game Half-Life. Fast forward to 2010 and GG was still going strong. So strong, in fact, that a company started selling a real-life GG button as a novelty item that gamers could smack after a good game.

GG is most commonly found in chats of online multiplayer games. Even when the acronym is found on social media, it’s usually in a gaming-related post. The acronym is also sometimes said in person at the end of live gaming matches, such as at a tournament.

GG has become so ingrained into gaming culture that it’s been adopted in non-English speaking countries, including those that don’t even use the Latin alphabet.
