n.  A palm (Hyphaene thebaica) native to the Nile Valley of northeast Africa and having oblong or ovoid fruits the size of an orange with a distinctive aroma and taste. Also called doum, gingerbread palm.

[Probably from Arabic dialectal dōm, variant of Arabic dawm.]
