Origin of Gond¹

First recorded in 1810–15; from Hindi, from Sanskirit goṇḍa “fleshy navel, person having a fleshy navel, Gond”

The trunk exudes a gum called in India “kanni ki gond,” an article of commerce.

Agaria.1—A small Dravidian caste, who are an offshoot of the Gond tribe.

They are musicians of the Gond tribe and dance and beg at their weddings.

The chief, who is descended from the old Gond royal family, received the title of raja as an hereditary distinction in 1898.

The Gond names are probably also those of animals, plants or other objects, but their meaning has now generally been forgotten.
