Groz·ny or Groz·nyy  (grôz'nē)  The capital of Chechnya in southwest Russia. In the center of a rich oil-producing area, it was a major objective of German forces during World War II. As a result of fighting (1994-1995) between Russian troops and Chechen secessionists, the city was largely destroyed. The city's population in 1993 was 117,800. |
