First recorded in 1860–65

In parts of the country, especially from Connecticut southward, the Hay-scented Fern is one of the abundant plants.

After untold centuries, the wild rose and the hay-scented fern cluster round the boulder, and dandelions star the grass.

But I can testify that the Hay-scented Fern does not make so good a bed as it promises.

The Hay-scented Fern is very sensitive, withering with the early frosts.
