a colorless or pale-yellow, crystalline compound, C 16 H 14 O 6 ·3H 2 O, the coloring material of logwood: used as a mordant dye and as an indicator.

First recorded in 1840–50; hemato- + xyl- ( def ) + -in ²

The nerve cells and fibers were studied in preparations fixed in Flemming's fluid and stained with iron hematoxylin.

A general hematoxylin stain was very satisfactory for general anatomy.

As a result of this process, a great part of the hematoxylin is converted to the hematein.

It is rather small for dissection, but very good complete series were obtained and stained in hematoxylin.
