"side of fireplace," 1674, alt. of hubbe (1511), of unknown origin, perhaps somehow related to the first element in hobnail (q.v.).

Hob
"clown, prankster," short for hobgoblin (q.v.). Hence, to play the hob "make mischief" (1838).
