Word Origin & History

holly
c.1150, shortening of O.E. holegn "holly," from P.Gmc. *khuli- (cf. O.H.G. hulis, O.N. hulfr, M.Du. huls, Ger. hulst "holly"), cognate with M.Ir. cuilenn, Welsh celyn, Gael. cuilionn "holly," probably all from PIE base *qel- "to prick" (cf. O.C.S. kolja "to prick," Rus. kolos "ear of corn"). Fr. houx "holly" is from Frank. *huls.
