Hunter, John (1728–1793), British anatomist and surgeon. Hunter ranks as one of the greatest surgeons in medical history. He made a number of veryimportant contributions to the practice of surgery which based it on sound biological principles and transformed it into a scientific profession. He also devised an operation for a popliteal aneurysm.An account of the operation, published in 1786 by Sir Everard Home (1756–1832), included a description of Hunter's canal.
