Hupa

In that language the word for moccasin is hupa, and the word hishe means wrinkled.

So the bird escaped his enemies, and it is from that that the people call him “hupa-hishe.”

Hupa—Men: Robe, and waist-garment on occasion, moccasins (rarely); men frequently and old men generally went entirely naked.

Pipe (tobacco), schandúh-hupa (hupa short and low, without emphasis).

The two tribes are said to have been as numerous formerly as the Hupa, by whom they were overcome and nearly exterminated.
