a Lycian king commissioned by his son-in-law, Proetus, to kill Bellerophon: after surviving ordeals designed to destroy him, Bellerophon was believed to be divinely protected, and Iobates gave him half his kingdom.

Then Bellerophon sped back to the court of Iobates and announced that the Chimra was dead.

Iobates next sent him on an expedition against the Solymans, a fierce neighbouring tribe with whom he was at enmity.

Iobates, who had become greatly attached to the youth, was horror-struck at its contents.

Iobates sent the youth on dangerous errands, but he came off unharmed from all.

But as soon as one work was done King Iobates found another.
