Jau·rès  (zhô-rěs')  French journalist and leader of the French Socialist Party before World War I. In 1914 he argued for arbitration rather than armed conflict between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. Jaurès was assassinated by a fanatical nationalist. |
