He may have aimed at saving his country and coming out a glorious hero, like Gideon or Jephthah.

Jephthah, then, is distinctly held up to us by a canonical writer as an object of praise.

I am aware of no reason why any believer in Christianity should not be free to canvass, regret, condemn the act of Jephthah.

Now the whole force of this rejoinder depends upon our supposed obligation as believers to approve the conduct of Jephthah.
