< Medieval Greek, Greek káthisma seat, equivalent to kathís(is) a sitting (equivalent to kathid-, stem of kathízein to sit down (itself equivalent to kat- kat- + hízein to set, sit; see sit) + -sis -sis, with -ds- > -s-) + -ma agent suffix
