a person who belongs to a Hindu mercantile caste alleged to originate with the Kshatriyas.

Origin of khatri¹

1620–30; < Hindi < Sanskrit kṣatriya Kshatriya

No village can get on without the Khatri who keeps the accounts, does the banking business, and buys and sells the grain.

There is a proverb, “He who is sharper than a Bohra must be mad, and he who is fairer than a Khatri must be a leper.”

They are of the Khatri class, and are found all over the country even amongst the wildest tribes.
