O.E. haligdæg, from halig "holy" + dæg "day;" in 14c. meaning both "religious festival" and "day of recreation," but pronunciation and sense diverged 16c.

annunciation 
c.1400, from Fr. annonciation, from L. annuntiationem (nom. annuntiatio), from annuntiatus, pp. of annuntiare (see announce). The Church festival (March 25) commemorating the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, foretelling the incarnation.
