Lanarkshire

historichistoric county of south-central Scotland, roughly coinciding with the basin of the River Clyde. It is bounded to the south by the historic county of Dumfriesshire, to the east by Peeblesshire, Midlothian, and West Lothian, to the north by Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire, and to the west by Renfrewshire and Ayrshire. It encompasses all of the council areas of South Lanarkshire and the City of Glasgow, most of the council area of North Lanarkshire, and part of the council area of East Dunbartonshire.
