1548, from Ger. Lärche, from M.H.G. larche, from O.H.G. *larihha, from L. larix (gen. laricis), probably a loan-word from an Alpine Gaulish language, corresponding phonetically to O.Celt. *darik- "oak" (see Druid and tree).
