kook·a·bur·ra (kŏŏk'ə-bûr'ə, -bŭr'ə) n. A large kingfisher (Dacelo novaeguineae) of southern and eastern Australia, having brown and white plumage and a call resembling raucous laughter. Also called laughing jackass.
