a brown crystalline compound, PbO 2 , toxic, insoluble in water and alcohol, soluble in glacial acetic acid: used as an oxidizing agent, in lead-acid batteries, and in analytical chemistry.

First recorded in 1900–05

When acted on by nitric acid a brown residue of lead dioxide is left, nitrate of lead going into solution.

With water it forms a hydrate, and ultimately decomposes into lead dioxide and hydrochloric acid.

Ozonised air becomes deozonised when passed over cold manganese dioxide, silver dioxide, or lead dioxide.
