lederhosen 
1937, from Ger., lit. "leather trousers" (see leather and hose). Leather shorts worn in Alpine regions. O.E. had cognate leðerhose. Ger. hosen displaced O.H.G. bruch (see breeches), the basic Gmc. word for "trousers."
