Word Origin & History

love apple
"tomato," 1578, corresponding to Fr. pomme d'amour, Ger. liebesapfel, but the reason for the term remains obscure. One guess is that it is a corruption of It. pomo de'Mori or Sp. pome dei Moro, lit. "Moorish apple."
