any of a group of insects in the order Neuroptera, the adults of which bear a superficial resemblance to the praying mantid (suborder Mantodea). The European mantispid (Mantispa styriaca) is 12 to 20 mm (0.5 to 0.8 inch) long and has a wingspread of about 25 mm (1 inch)
