Farther eastward, the ferox stock was isolated in more mesic, probably swampy, marshy habitats.

Peromyscus maniculatus is ubiquitous, occurring in habitats ranging from mesic boreal forests to arid southwestern deserts.

Most subspecies of P. maniculatus live in moderately mesic or near-mesic environments, but a few have adapted to arid conditions.

However, in summer, the finding of a racer in mesic woodland is a rare event.

The mesic conditions to the north in Tabasco and Yucatn probably have restricted the movement of pygmy mice to the north.
