In the last five weeks, Judge Saed Youssef, in Minya, Upper Egypt, has sentenced 1,212 people to their deaths in two mass trials.

The court in Minya  handed down those death sentences to 529 supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood after a single hearing.

Another man inside the church said his family in Minya was currently hiding in their home, afraid for their lives.

Over a dozen churches in Minya alone have been attacked or torched since the violent dispersal of the Islamist sit-ins, they said.
