Located 1 mile (1.6 km) from the city limits of the capital, it is connected to Paris by the Metro (subway). A centre for processing hides and skins, Montreuil also manufactures cookies (biscuits), textiles, and porcelain and produces chemicals for tanning. Peach trees, for which the locality was once famous, still grow there. In the centre of the old town, the Church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul has a 12th-century choir.
