Is Tuesday named for a one-handed god?
island in Hancock county, southeastern Maine, U.S., in Frenchman Bay of the Atlantic Ocean. With an area of 108 square miles (280 square km), it is 15 miles (24 km) long and about 8 miles (13 km) wide. Somes Sound, a 6-mile- (10-km-) long narrow fjord, divides it into eastern and western segments. The island was visited in September 1604 by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain and was named by him for the bare-rock summits of its mountains. Until 1713 it was part of French Acadia.
