Murano
island, north of Venice, in Veneto region, northeastern Italy, with an area of 1,134 acres (459 hectares) in the Laguna Veneta (Venice Lagoon). It was founded between the 5th and the 7th century, and it experienced its major development after 1291, when glass furnaces were moved there from Venice. Murano became the manufacturing centre for Venetian glass, exported in large quantities to all of Europe. It reached its high point in the 16th century, when it had more than 30,000 inhabitants; glassmaking continues but on a considerably reduced scale.
