1770–80, Americanism; < Massachusett cognate of Western Abenaki mòskwas (perh. equiv. to Proto-Algonquian *mo⋅ŝk- bobbing above the surface of the water + *-exkwe⋅ head + derivational elements, i.e., the one whose head bobs above the water)
