Smithsonian Institution museum established by an act of Congress in 1989, with branches in New York City; Suitland, Maryland; and Washington, D.C. Permanent and temporary exhibits showcase the diverse heritage and history of North and South American Indians. With more than 800,000 cultural artifacts on display and a collection of 90,000 photographs, the museum is the largest of its kind in the world. Through its program of lectures, seminars, performances, storytelling, film, and multimedia resources, the museum educates visitors in the cultural practices and identities of hundreds of indigenous tribes.
