Nei Mong·gol   (nā' mŏn'gōl', mŏng'-)   
An autonomous region of northeast China. Originally the southern section of Mongolia, it was annexed by the Manchus in 1635, later becoming an integral part of China in 1911. Hohhot is the capital. Population: 23,300,000.

Note: It is unofficially called Outer Mongolia.
Note: Mongolia proclaimed itself independent from China in 1911. With Soviet support, a communist regime was established in 1921. In 1990, the Communist party gave up its monopoly on power.
