pathogenic 
"producing disease," 1852, from Fr. pathogénique, from Gk. pathos "disease" (see pathos) + Fr. génique "producing." Earlier pathogenetic (1838). Pathogen "a bacteria that produces disease" is an 1880 back-formation.
