O·vie·do   (ō-vyā'dō, ō-vyě'thō)   
A city of northwest Spain near the Cantabrian Mountains. Founded c. 760, it flourished as the capital of Asturian kings until 910. The city was severely damaged during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Population: 217,000.
