Patriots' Day

Patriots’ Day commemorates the Battle of Lexington and Concord, which began the American Revolution.

It is observed as a legal holiday in a few places, including the states of Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, and Wisconsin. (In Maine, it is officially known as Patriot’s Day.)

Patriots’ Day should not be confused with Patriot Day, the U.S. holiday in commemoration and remembrance of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11).

In Massachusetts, Maine, and Connecticut, Patriots’ Day is observed each year on the third Monday in April. In 2023, it will be observed on April 17. In 2024, it will be observed on April 15. Wisconsin celebrates Patriots’ Day on April 19, the anniversary of the day of the battle in 1775.

Patriots’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775, but the day wasn’t celebrated until the late 1800s, when it was first observed in Massachusetts. In 1969, the holiday was moved from April 19 to the third Monday in April.
