Dutch colonial administrator. The last Dutch governor (1646-1664) of New Netherland, he was unpopular for his harsh leadership and in 1664 was forced to surrender the colony to England.

Stuyvesant, Peter [(steye-vi-sent)]

A notoriously hot-tempered governor of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1664, he surrendered it to the English, who renamed it New York.

Note: Stuyvesant's most familiar feature was his artificial right leg, fitted with silver ornaments.
