c.1300, from O.Fr. porcion (12c.), from L. portionem (nom. portio) "share, part," accusative of the noun in the phrase pro portione "according to the relation (of parts to each other)" (see proportion). The verb meaning "to divide in portions" is recorded from early 14c.
