primary growth

Growth in vascular plants resulting from the production of primary tissues by an apical meristem . The plant body grows lengthwise chiefly by the enlargement of cells produced by the apical meristem (rather than by cell division). Because they lack secondary tissues, most monocots and herbaceous plants grow solely by primary growth until they reach maturity, when growth stops.
Compare secondary growth

The glands form tumours of variable size, and are often larger than the primary growth, the characters of which they reproduce.

Sometimes the primary growth appears in the form of multiple nodules which tend to become confluent.

The primary growth may remain so small that its presence is not even suspected, or it may increase in size, ulcerate, and fungate.

Secondary sarcoma, whether derived from a primary growth in the bone or in the soft parts, is much rarer than secondary cancer.
