Word Origin & History
1515, from M.Fr. Suisse, from M.H.G. Suizer, from Suiz "Switzerland" (cf. Switzer, archaic word for "a Swiss," and Ger. Schweiz). Switzerland is named for Schwyz, one of its ancient cantons.
