It is a northwestern residential and industrial suburb of Paris situated on the west bank of the Seine River opposite the suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine and the Bois de Boulogne, which separate it from the capital. The town is connected to Paris by a regional express railway running from the Rond Point de la Defense. Modern high-rise buildings have been built in Puteaux along the Defense Quartier and the Avenue du General-de-Gaulle (a prolongation of the Champs-Elysees and the Avenue de la Grande Armee). The monumental Palais des Expositions, built of steel, concrete, and glass in 1957-59, has about three times as much space as the old Grand Palais in the Champs-Elysees in Paris itself. Puteaux's industries include automobile construction, printing, and the manufacture of perfumes, cosmetics, and rubber products. Pop. (1999) 40,780.
