thorny shrub of the apple family, 1664, from Mod.L. genus name Pyracantha, from Gk. pyrakantha (Dioscorides), a plant named but not described, from pyr- "fire" + akantha "thorn, thorny plant," from PIE base *ak- "sharp, pointed" (see acrid).
