quip  (n.)
1532, variant of quippy, in same sense (1519), perhaps from L. quippe "indeed, forsooth" (used sarcastically), from quid "what," neut. of quis "who" (cf. quibble) + emphatic particle -pe. The verb is recorded from 1584.
