A volcanic island of the southern Pacific Ocean west-northwest of Tahiti. It is the largest of the Leeward group of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. Migration of its people to Hawaii, the Cook Islands, and New Zealand is believed to have begun some 600 years ago.
