Reuchlin

Their mother had a relative, named Elizabeth, a sister of the well-known distinguished scholar Reuchlin, residing in Pforzheim.

Reuchlin also gave young Schwartzerd the name of Melanchthon, which is the Greek word for his own name, (black earth).

Melanchthon frequently journeyed to the not far distant city of Stuttgart, where Reuchlin then resided.

It gave Reuchlin much trouble, and caused much correspondence to and fro.
