Rip·ley   (rĭp'lē)   
American minister, scholar, and literary critic. An important figure in the New England Transcendentalist movement, he directed the utopian community at Brook Farm, near Boston (1841-1847), and was the literary critic of the New York Tribune (1849-1880).
