1674, "of or like sugar," from M.L. saccharum "sugar," from L. saccharon, from Gk. sakkharon, from Pali sakkhara, from Skt. sarkara "gravel, grit" (see sugar). Metaphoric sense of "overly sweet" first recorded 1841.
