Early Christian church father and philosopher who served (396-430) as the bishop of Hippo (in present-day Algeria). Through such writings as the autobiographical Confessions (397) and the voluminous City of God (413-426), he profoundly influenced Christianity, arguing against Manicheanism and Donatism and helping to establish the doctrine of original sin.

Saint Au·gus·tine   (ô'gə-stēn')   
A city of northeast Florida on the Atlantic Ocean south-southeast of Jacksonville. Founded by the Spanish in 1565, it is the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States. The city was strategically important from 1586, when Sir Francis Drake burned it, until the Civil War, when it was occupied by Union troops. Population: 12,100.

An important teacher in the Christian church, who lived in the fourth and fifth centuries. After a dramatic conversion to Christianity, Augustine became a bishop. He is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. His works include The City of God and his autobiography, Confessions.
